[Had this one up for a while but it is only the first out of a series of three compilations and why not post them all together?]
For those still believing that the term skinhead is synonymous with neo-nazi, here's the final solid proof that this is a total misconception. The first compilation of a series of three released by the antifascist Insurgence Records presents us with 19 bands mostly from the SHARP (SkinHeads Against Racial Prejudice) and RASH (Red and Anarchist SkinHeads) scene. Not a skinhead myself - full head of hair here - I'm nonetheless fascinated by their subculture and praise their class consciousness. Their music is awesome too, this isn't the first oi! release I'm posting here. Street Troopers, Brigada Flores Magon and Los Fastidios deliver some of the best tracks on the disc but it's full of sometimes catchy, sometimes angry songs about working class life, beating up nazis and other fun, important subjects.

Leningrad are a Russian ska band and this album of theirs is called Made in Zhopa (= Ass). It does not pay tribute to its name at all. If we were to speak in meme terms, I suppose this would be made of win and relevant to your interests. Of course I haven't got a clue what any of the songs is about - except, I assume, the wonderful Hip-hop (pronounce: ghip-ghop) - but no matter what the songs are about, the language sounds fascinating. Especially in the hands of legendary singer and mastermind of the band, nicknamed Schnur, who's notorious for his use of the obscene sort of "side-language" of Russian, called Mat'. Their music was featured in the brilliant film Everything is Illuminated, based on the brilliant book, Everything is Illuminated. Anyway. Polnye Karmany, Zlye Puli, Stop Maschina are very entertaining tracks, and none of the songs is as rushed as some more punkish bands make them. On a sunny summer's day you too may find you are listening to this album over and over again.

Shit yeah, some more upbeat (is there any other kind?) ska-punk, from the least expected of places! Maybe you already guessed but the bandname is a combination of Presley and Michael. The lyrics, usually in endearing broken English, are all about, er... yeah. Most of the time they don't really seem to be about anything at all, really. Fun nonetheless! Some great tracks are the reggae tunes Smoke the Herb and Smile, No Problem, the punkier My Beer and Be Yourself, and the Happy Metal Song that starts out as metal indeed but does switch back to ska. The album title is funny but definitely not representative of the music, they're doing more than okay as far as I can judge. Who cares about instrumental prowess, anyway? It's the fun that matters.

Band/artist - Reel Big Fish
Genre(s) - Ska punk
Origin - United States of America
Album - Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album
Year of release - 2006
Double live albums are the best of albums, only exceeded by three-disc live albums of course but you can't have it all. This one is crammed full of purebred ska punk that's bound to make you skank around. Those responsible, the Reel Big Fish, have something entirely endearing. They don't have much up with politics and focus purely on fun, awesomeness and kicking asses. Retaining much more old school ska influences than for instance Less than Jake or Mad Caddies, their melodies are filled with a huge amount of positive energy, the lyrics are very hilarious and sarcastic and they take the time for some incredibly witty stage banter. Tracks deal with relationships going horribly wrong, the vagaries of the music industry, picking up chicks, kicking ass, having a good time and other such light subjects, and there are way too many really awesome ones on here to point them out for you. The guys sound like they're really having fun on-stage, and with music like theirs, how couldn't they.

Band/artist - Various
Genre(s) - Various
Origin - The Netherlands, Belgium
Album - My compilation for youuuuu!
Year of release - Never, duh
I made a compilation of some of the funniest, prettiest, best and whackiest Dutch songs on my computer - don't have so many, to be honest. The first half of track one is still in English, then it's into the unknown! (well unless you happen to speak the language). Since all tracks are so different I'll describe them individually.
- The Amazing Stroopwafels - Oude Maasweg (bit meditative old rock)
- Nou En - Gothic meisje (pop/rock song about a girl who only wears black)
- THC - Je weet het (raw hiphop from Amsterdam)
- Malle Pietje en de Bimbo's - Tienerhoer (100% literally translated Hole-cover)
- Bert en Ernie - Zoek de zeep (Ernie from Sesame Street is looking for the soap)
- Razorblade - Jeugdcultuur (hard oi! from Brabant)
- De Huilende Rappers - Butje (catchy and nonsensical rap from Groningen)
- Boudewijn de Groot - Prikkebeen (beautiful psychedelic folk track)
- De Hardheid - 't vrouwtje (ska, about a neglected wife's bloody revenge)
- Boudewijn de Groot - Welterusten mijnheer de president (Holland's official Vietnam-era protest song)
- The Opposites - Sjonnie & Anita (dark hiphop track about the typical "low cultured" Dutch couple)
- Drs. P - Dodenrit (all about Russian horsedrawn carriages, wolves and nursery rhymes)
- Internationale Nieuwe Scene - Blijf niet gelaten op de wonderen wachten (Flemish revolutionary song from the 70s)
- Countess - Heilig vuur (entirely anti-musical early Bathory-like black metal abortion; funny if it weren't so sad)
- Fluisterwoud - Hoer van de zeven hemelen (actually quite decent raw BM)
- De Internationale (Ontwaakt, verworpenen der aarde...!)

Well, alright then. One ska punk album for mister, and a mighty fine one it is too. The Mad Caddies are from California and the music is fittingly sunny but not so much that it gets shallow. They don't so much mix melodic punk rock with ska, rather tend to change back and forth between the two. This is not at all a bother as these guys are good musicians and they know how to put together well-running songs. The band displays a large variety of influences and tricks to keep the ride pleasant till the end and in that case, the rule goes: the more tracks, the more fun to be had.

Band/artist - De Hardheid
Genre(s) - Ska, ska-punk
Origin - Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Album - De Nodige Hardheid
Year of release - 2003
Something fun from the mother soil. De Hardheid (The Hardness) are a ska(-punk) band from the god-awful city of Amsterdam. This isn't their fault so let's not attack them on it. They're not quite as awesome as Ska-P but that's no fair comparison anyway; as an individual band they're plenty awesome. Sing their lyrics in their native tongue as well, look at society with a critical eye, etc. The difference is that with De Hardheid, this translates into wry, cynical satire on modern-day western society, instead of purely political statements. To me the lyrics are the most entertaining aspect of De Nodige Hardheid (The Necessary Hardness). Personally I think our language is both illogical and blunt, but the band has a lot of dark, biting humour. The Track 't Vrouwtje for instance is about a housewife whose husband never wants to have secks anymore because he just wants to drink beer and watch tv, so she cuts off his penis and balls in revenge. Nice! Every other song on the album is about being lazy, drinking beer or things and people that are annoying. The ska is, well, ska-like. With a bit of punk-like punk sprinkled here and there. There are some more mediocre songs, and even those got as nice a groove as any ska is supposed to have, but I can't help but compare them to Ska-P, which they just can't match even at their best moments. It's unfair, they deserve a more objective reviewer.
